While divorce is often associated with unfavorable outcomes for children, it is not equally bad for all children. Every situation and every child is different and some children will fare better than others. The key is making sure they get the support they need during this challenging time.
Children can fair better after a divorce—especially when the divorce removes them from a high-conflict situation. In fact, they may even show improvements in well-being.
Parents who find a balance between dealing with the divorce and their emotions while supporting their children throughout the process will see the most success. Remember, the divorce may make sense to you, but it still may be perplexing for your children. Focus on meeting their needs along the way and they can learn to cope with the situation in a healthy manner.
Children do best when they know that their parents are still going to be their parents. They need to know that they will still have parents who plan to be involved in their lives even though the marriage is ending.
